Everything you will ever need to know about Ikea wooden dowels
Last updated: 18 Aug 2022

The cylindrical wooden pegs or sticks you will find with lots of flat pack furniture are called dowels. They help align and position parts of the furniture. Dowels don't need to be glued in.
In this post we will answer some of the most common questions about dowels in flat pack and ready to assemble furniture.
What size are Ikea dowels
Ikea dowels come in a range of sizes. Below is a list of common dowel sizes and part numbers made by Ikea:
- #101375: 5mm (D) x 30mm (L)
- #101345: 6mm (D) x 30mm (L)
- #101339: 6mm (D) x 50mm (L)
- #101350: 8mm (D) x 30mm (L)
- #101359: 10mm (D) x 40mm (L)
Check the instructions for your Ikea product to see the identification number for that part.
I'm missing a dowel
If you're missing a part, such as a dowel, get in contact with Ikea or the manufactor you purchased the furniture from. Ikea will send you a replacement free of charge through the post. Alternatively dowels can be purchased from eBay and Amazon. Simply search for the part identification number.
Help! I have a left over dowel
Often you may come to the end of an assembly and realise you have an extra dowel left over. It's always sensible to double check the instructions incase you missed something. However usually this is because manufacturers, like Ikea, over supply the amount of dowels compared to the amount listed in the instructions. Keep any spare dowels handy - you never know when you might need them for a future build.
How to remove a stuck Ikea dowel
Usually dowels will come out simply by pulling them with your hand. However sometimes they can become stuck. If you're unable to remove a dowel by hand use a pair of pliers to get more leverage and the dowel should come straight out.
What wood are Ikea dowels made from
Ikea dowels are made from Birch.
